The museum is located in a 400-year-old half-timbered house, which after its roof rider with bell tower is known as the bell house.
The 800-year history of the painting trade is shown.
Contemporary documents, journeyman and master's letters, guild objects and examination papers clearly show the viewer the working techniques and ways of life of the different generations of painters.
In 2019, the German Museum of Painters and Varnishers celebrated the 35th anniversary of the museum.

The bell house (so named after the bell roof rider) was built around 1600 and is an example of the early country house culture in the Hamburg area. The original farmstead was expanded by a country house-like residential area. In 1972 the brick building was placed under monument protection. In 1984 it became the home of the German Painter and Varnish Museum. A visit there is just as worthwhile as a detour to the bell house garden. The Bergedorf district office had this rebuilt as a baroque garden as a supplement to the half-timbered house, based on a garden plan from 1879 originally created for a Hamburg villa. There is also a herb and kitchen garden adjacent to the ornamental garden. All very pretty
