One of the Lomond Hills’ twin conical mounds, hikes up East Lomond take you up above the patchwork landscape of Fife and reveal wonderful views that reach surprisingly far. The summit sits at 1,713 feet (522 m) and there’s a choice of ascents, allowing for both gentle and steep hikes.
With no technical sections and a car park at the base, hiking trails up East Lomond are perfect for those building hiking strength, walking with children or as a stop on a Lomond Hill horseshoe hike. With a view indicator on the summit, you’ll be able to see what you’re looking at with ease and continue hiking if you choose.
The Lomond Hills are a compact group, allowing for a complete circuit in a single day. The picturesque village of Falkland resides immediately north of East Lomond, making for a perfect base and start to the walk. Ascending this eye-catching hill from the village takes you up a steep route, so if you’re looking for the gentlest ascent, it’s better to begin from the car park in the east.
Once home to a hill fort, East Lomond, otherwise called Falkland Hill, is a striking viewpoint. More recent history can be found on its south west slope, where an old limekiln and disused quarry remain. Grassy and easy underfoot, once you’ve rested on the summit, you can head west to Maiden Castle and West Lomond if you fancy.
Hike East Lomond throughout the year, enjoying the vibrant Fife summer and crisp winters. Take care in snowy or icy conditions and don’t forget your camera. West Lomond is a particular photogenic hill from East Lomond. If you have time, explore Maspie Den nearby, with its waterfalls, woodlands and pretty paths.
A great viewpoint for Fife. Two options to ascent this peak, the shortest is a 20 minute walk from the east car park. The longer option from Craigmead car park in the west is also the best place to walk to West Lomond.

Incredible views of the surrounding area. Windy, but really nice.
