In 1870, Armand Leclerc, a merchant in Rouen, aimed to build not a holiday home but a large hotel, facing the sea. Inaugurated in 1879, four years later he added a private roadside chapel. Its architecture, combining brick and limestone, brings it closer to the Saint-Aubin church in Houlgate, inaugurated in 1878.
The chapel was restored in 1945 and found new stained glass windows in 1948. They are made by Georges-Pierre SAGOT. Master Glass Painter in Bayeux, born in Roubaix on June 12, 1898 and died in Bayeux on May 11, 1975. The “flamboyant” stained glass windows of the nave and choir are remarkable. Their red, orange and purple hues are particularly original. They take up the theme of the “Beatitudes”.

The town of Varaville in Calvados has 2 poles: "Le Hôme" green setting on the seafront, and "Le Bourg" surrounded by agricultural land and the marshes of La Dives. Historically, the north of the municipal area was covered with dunes at Hôme, between Merville and Varaville. Around 1860, the Normandy coast developed, thanks to the train which put Deauville and Cabourg at 5.30 a.m. from Paris via, respectively, Lisieux and Mézidon. In 1877, Mr. Armand LE CLERC bought land to build a large hotel for the 1879 season. He also built the Saint-Joseph du Home chapel on his money, optimistic for the future of this small seaside resort. After the entire destruction of the town of Varaville and Hôme in 1944, the chapel was repaired in 1945. In 1949, Father ETIENNE could welcome the PICAND bishop who came to bless the restored chapel, who lost his octagonal pinnacle for the '' current slate arrow placed on a square volume.
