Description
The Gellener Torfmöörte is a former nature reserve in Lower Saxony. It is located in the municipalities of Elsfleth in the Wesermarsch district and Rastede in the Ammerland district as well as in the independent city of Oldenburg.
The former nature reserve with the registration number NSG WE 137 is around 120 hectares in size. 107.4 hectares of the area are in the Wesermarsch district, 11.6 hectares in the Ammerland district and 1 hectare in the city of Oldenburg. The former nature reserve is part of the FFH area “Ipweger Moor, Gellener Torfmöörte”. The area has been under nature protection since June 4, 1983. On December 22, 2018, the newly designated nature reserve “Gellener Torfmöörte mit Rockenmoor and Fuchsberg” opened. The responsible lower nature conservation authorities were the districts of Wesermarsch and Ammerland and the city of Oldenburg.

Rare these days, but here you can still discover a piece of original moor. The 120-hectare nature reserve is truly idyllic: moorland, ponds, moorland and peat patches ensure a varied landscape. As you cycle through, you can enjoy great views and maybe even spot one of the rare species of dragonflies that live here.
