Between 1963 and 1992, NATO operated a rocket and radar display on the summit of the Steinberg. After the end of use, the sealed areas of the missile site were largely broken up under the leadership of NABU from 1998 and most of the buildings were dismantled; in addition, small bodies of water were created. One building was preserved as a shelter for wintering bats. The approximately 10 hectare site is a settlement area for several species of owls, amphibians, the rare smooth snake and pioneer plants that are repopulating the former rocket station.
