The main cemetery of the city of Koblenz is located in the Goldgrube district on the north and west slopes of the Karthauses. It is the largest cemetery in the city and, thanks to its architectural terraces and the old trees, is also the city's landscape park. The construction of the cemetery became necessary at the end of the 18th century because the former cemetery at the Löhrtor had to be closed due to the city fortifications. The new main cemetery was inaugurated in 1820, although the site was still outside the city limits at that time. With the growing population, the abandonment of the short occupancy period of 10 years and the high death toll in the world wars, the cemetery grounds had to be constantly expanded.

In addition to the military cemeteries, numerous other special memorials and memorials were erected, for example for the fallen under Napoleon or the victims of the bridge disaster in Lützel in 1930. In addition, countless important personalities are buried, for example Karl Baedeker, Max von Schenkendorf and many Prime Ministers and Lord Mayors of the city of Koblenz.

A special feature of the cemetery is the arboretum, which was laid out in the 1980s, a comprehensive tree nature trail with more than 500 different tree and shrub species along the eastern slope. The entrance to the path is on Beatusstraße and is marked by a slice of a giant sequoia tree.

The main cemetery of the city of Koblenz is a listed building and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
