In 2002 the Galibier tunnel was reopened after a complete renovation and 25 years after it was closed. Since then, two alternatives have been available to traffic over the Galibier in the summit area. Cyclists have not been allowed to drive through the tunnel since it reopened, and pedestrians are also not allowed to use it. The traffic light, which regulates the alternating one-way traffic through the tube and the confluence of the tunnel and the old apex route, is the highest light signaling system in Europe at an altitude of 2,556 m.
