On the Schlossberg you can still see ramparts and moats, the remains of the created mountain ring and the gate, the ruins of two round towers and a semicircular tower, as well as the remains of walls and foundations of the residential wing of the castle.

        Ehrenfels castle ruins

Ehrenfels lies on a mountaintop and is equipped with an impressive ditch system. The surrounding, wide ditch is at least 6 m deep. The side facing the plateau in the south is secured by an additional ditch in front. There was probably an extensive outer bailey on this side. The entrance with a simple gate can be reached via a raised ramp and secured by a strong, round wall tower (today only a stump). Another rectangular wall tower is to the north.
The palace was in the eastern half; today all that remains is a low wall and overgrown foundations. According to sources, the complex once had seven towers, but today there is no longer any sign of a separate keep or gate tower.
The family was first mentioned in 1256: “Chunradus de Ernvels” is closely related to the Hohenfelsers. As a result, the respected knights from Ehrenfels appear as close advisors to the Bishop of Regensburg and later also as vassals of the Bavarian dukes. Despite their importance, they were unable to stop social decline. In 1335, the people of Ehrenfels had to sell the castle to Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian due to high debts, who passed it on to Dietrich von Stauf.
Dietrich immediately moves his headquarters to Ehrenfels. In 1416, the people of Reichstadt from Regensburg conquered the castle to defend themselves against the constant attacks of the Hohenstaufens. However, they have to repair the castle again after a legally binding judgment; the construction management is led by cathedral builder Wenzel, who adapts the castle to modern weapons technology.
In 1492, the Wittelsbach Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria destroyed Ehrenfels Castle because Hieronymus and Bernhardin Staufer were significantly involved in the Löwler League's knightly revolt. The last Hohenstaufen finally sold the estate to the Duchy of Palatinate-Neuburg in 1568. The fortress was rapidly falling into disrepair and was finally destroyed in 1635 during the Thirty Years' War. The ruins were then used as a quarry for nearby Beratzhausen.

The castle was first mentioned indirectly in 1256 with Chunradus de Ernvels.
In 1335, Ehrenfels came to Dietrich von Stauf with part of the dominion over King Ludwig the Bavarian.
In 1373, Hans von Ehrenfels pledged his half at Ehrenfels to Count Palatine Ruprecht I. Shortly afterwards, in 1380, Dietrich von Stauf zu Ehrenfels, vice-dom zu Sulzbach, bestowed the eternal mass in his chapel at Ehrenfels Castle.
In 1416 the Regensburgers conquered the castle because of robber barons, but had to repair it again. For this purpose, the Regensburg cathedral master builder Wenzla was commissioned with the refortification of the castle, which, however, was reintroduced in 1492 by Duke Albrecht IV in the course of fighting the Lion League, since Bernhardin von Stauf zu Ehrenfels belonged to the same.
In 1567, Duke Wolfgang von Pfalz-Neuburg acquired Ehrenfels, which was described at the end of the 16th century as a "Wolgelegen Bergkhaus" with seven towers, but by then it was already dilapidated.
In 1635 the Swedes destroyed the castle, which came into private ownership in the mid-19th century and was partially renovated in the early 1990s.
On the occasion of the 750th anniversary of Ehrenfels Castle, a 208-page volume was published by Verlag Lassleben, Kallmünz, in 2012: 750 years of Ehrenfels Castle in Beratzhausen.

The climb to the 800-year-old castle is definitely worth it. There is a lot of information on the boards so that young and old can learn something new.

This is a hike that I can also recommend for hot summer days. Large parts are in the shade and there is also the opportunity to cool off in the Laaber. In winter it is very tranquil and it is not to be expected that one of the inns in Beratzhausen will be open. However, all the sunken roads and the few asphalt stand out.

Great castle ruins, easy to reach. Some information boards to read about the history of the castle. Small construction sites around the castle

There isn't much left of the castle, but you can take a look
