The history of Freyburg begins with around 1090 on a mountain east of the present city built Neuchâtel, a spacious Romanesque complex with keep. The place Freyburg belonged to the territory of the landgraves in Thuringia, was first mentioned in 1203 and received in 1261 city law. As a result of the Leipzig division Freyburg came in 1485 with the Office Freyburg to the Albertine Duchy (1547 Electorate, 1806 Kingdom) Saxony and was there part of the Thuringian circle. The affiliation existed until 1815 (Wikipedia).
