In 1855, two years before Rosenheim was connected to the railway, a newly built, industrial grain mill began operating in the south of the market square. The mill, powered by a side canal of the Mangfall Canal, operated as a public limited company. Because of its modern production technology, based on the American model, it was referred to as an "art mill". In 1890, the art mill was expanded north of the three wings completed in 1855 with a large wheat mill. In 1905, the ground grain amounted to 175,000 quintals. The First World War finally made it necessary to expand the mill again. In order to be able to store larger stocks of grain, the management of the Rosenheim art mill decided to add a large silo building to the west of the wheat mill.
