Here the dog breed St. Bernard was bred as rescue dogs for the search for avalanche victims and made known worldwide, above all, by Barry, who is said to have saved the lives of over 40 people.

In 2005 the canons sold the Saint Bernard breeding to the Barry Foundation, as the canons felt that the longer they were, the more they were unable to take on the tasks of animal-friendly breeding and their hospitality. The breeding station for the dogs has since been located in the Musée et Chiens du Saint-Bernard in Martigny, but according to the deed of foundation, about half of the animals are on the pass as a tourist attraction all summer.
