    Gutenberg Monument (1837) + State Theater - Mainz 🚴‍♂️

    Monument

He stands enthroned, larger than life, on the square that bears his name: A Danish sculptor provided the design for the bronze statue of Johannes Gutenberg. Completely renovated in 2010, the monument depicts the inventor of the printing press, of whom no contemporary portrait exists, in an idealized representation: bearded, elegantly dressed, holding a Bible and printing type.

The people of Mainz celebrated the inauguration of the monument in 1837 with a three-day festival. In the final years of World War II, the bronze figure was buried in the ground next to the base for protection. In May 2008, the bronze figure had to be dismantled due to extensive damage. Over the next two years, it was painstakingly restored in a specialist workshop in Regensburg. In February 2010, the monument returned to Mainz. Many Mainz residents flocked to Gutenberg Square when the bronze statue was placed back on its pedestal. Even today, the area around the monument on Gutenberg Square is bustling with activity—and not just on St. John's Night, the festival honoring the city's greatest son. 🚴‍♂️
