The relatively recent appearance (rebuilt after the war) hides a very old origin (early 15th century), shrouded in mist and numerous legends. Despite its dominant position at an altitude of 85m above the valley of the Clerve, the castle was never the scene of war or battle. Originally, it was not intended as a residential residence, but as a fortified castle to accommodate a garrison.

The Schüttburg near Kautenbach has had many functions over time: garrison fortress, manorial residence or youth hostel. Today it is privately owned and cannot be visited.
