In the Honmaru (the central defense district) there was a second palace complex and a five-story main tower, which were destroyed by fire in the 18th century and never rebuilt. After the fall of the shogunate, the imperial residence was moved from the Katsura Imperial Palace to the Honmaru Palace of Nijo Castle.
In contrast to the Ninomaru Palace, the Honmaru Palace is only opened to the public on special occasions. However, visitors can visit the Honmaru Gardens and climb the stone foundation of the former main tower to get an overview of the castle complex.
