    The narrow canyon is a strategic link between the bay and the central valley. Besides the road hugging the twists and turns of the river it accommodates the old and new railroad tracks (the latter cuts more directly with the use of tunnels), and several water systems, one for irrigation. The other was used for drinking water since the early 1900s, but once the Sunol Valley Water Treatment Plant was constructed in the 1960s, the Niles aqueduct was almost entirely decommissioned. eastbayexpress.com/the-secret-sidewalk-may-not-be-secret-much-longer-1

    It is a favorite 'secret sidewalk' hangout for local kids, so neighbors would like the water district to dismantle it. For a while there was talk of repurposing it for trail construction as the road through the canyon without shoulder is not safe, but there has been no progress for a long time. atlasobscura.com/places/secret-sidewalk
