The Alameda Creek Regional Trail runs from the mouth of Niles Canyon in Fremont to the San Francisco Bay, allowing recreational access to the levees on both sides of Alameda Creek and its flood control channel. The trail on each side of the creek is roughly 12 miles long. The south side is paved and favored by cyclists, while the north side is unpaved and open to equestrian users. Both sides traverse densely-populated areas and are heavily used. A portion of the Alameda Creek Regional Trail is also a significant component of the San Francisco Bay Trail, a developing effort to create a 500-mile multiuse trail encircling the bay.
