The Steile Lagerung in Essen is a miners' monument made of cast bronze that commemorates the era of coal mining that was so important for the city of Essen.

In 1984, the city announced a competition for a monument that would commemorate Essen's history as the largest mining city in Europe at one time. Two years later, the Zollverein mine, the last of Essen's mines, closed and, after plans to demolish it were abandoned, has now become a monument itself.
