Of the actual castle, nothing can be seen, but the remaining hill gives a good impression of the defensive possibilities of this place

Rikenbeke Castle on Lake Ukleise was protected on one side by the lake and on the land side by a wide moat. There was also the farmyard with barn, stables and the knight's house in direct connection to the tower hill, also slightly protected by ramparts and surrounded by the Lebebenau, which flows here into the Ukleisee. The entire castle complex was largely secured by further high ramparts and ditches in the north and in the south, which can still be seen in the terrain today.
As can be seen from a document from 1429, there was a watermill at Rikenbeke Castle with the farmyard. Wilhelm Südel (Nüchel) found the place where this mill was once located, namely at the tributary from Lebebensee, Lebebenau, not far from today's route. Strong oak piles stuck in the ground still indicate the former mill jam.
The Breides family, whose ancestral home was Rikenbeke, was one of the most powerful medieval knight families in Ostholstein. It was they who pushed colonization further north. A Knight Breide is mentioned in documents in 1237 when the Lübeck Bishop Johannes I sold him the small village of Dedelmestorp between Fissau and Rikenbeke. The village went down later.
In 1429 the Breides sold Rikenbeke Castle and the surrounding countryside to the bishop. The bishop was not interested in cultivation, so the castle fell into disrepair and the land was forested again. Since then the area has been called "Desert Fields".
