The Rednitz is a Franconian river that bears its name from Georgensgemünd to Fürth, takes the Pegnitz here and forms the Regnitz with it. It is 46.48 km long and has a catchment area of 2 119 km2 with all tributaries. The Rednitz is classified as a 1st order body of water.

The Rednitz arises from the confluence of the Franconian and the Swabian Rezat. After the confluence of Pegnitz and Rednitz, the river Regnitz is named; this flows into the Main near Bischberg, northwest of Bamberg. Popularly in the Fürth region, all three rivers are called "Bängertz".

The name "Rednitz" comes from the Slavic and probably means "Schönfluss", probably because of the - earlier - clear water. The river bed is made of bladder sandstone, which is why the river was easy to cross at the ford.

In the early Middle Ages, the Rednitz was an important travel route for the kings on their train through the country. Traveling with flat boats had the advantage that it was faster and safer than traveling overland - see e.g. B. the Fürth founding legend.
