In the middle of the 12th century the church was built as a small chapel for the Virgin Mary and was extended to a Romanesque church with two towers around 1230.
From 1350 the high Gothic extension was built.
The church was used for worship until 1527.
The nave was completely destroyed in the Thirty Years' War and has been a ruin since 1633.
In 1803 the south tower was demolished due to dilapidation.
The tower, restored in 1996/97, carries the church bells.
The Widen Church is the oldest and most beautiful sacred monument in the city of Weida.

The way to the church is worth it for the view of the Osterburg. There is a picture frame there, which is a good opportunity for the perfect photo of Osterburg, of course also with your loved ones.
