Human remains at Hulton Abbey
During the 1970s excavations, the remains of a disarticulated skeleton were recovered in the chancel.
Analysis of the bones in 2004 identified the man as Hugh Despenser the Younger, The lover of King Edward II.
He was drawn, hung and quartered.
The evidence is overwhelming and fairly conclusive that the remains are those of the aforementioned.
A most vile man who came to a most vile end.
I learned the above whilst watching a documentary of Cardiff Castle recently on Netflix (Secrets of Great British Castles).
