The Totengrund is the nucleus of the nature reserve Lüneburger Heide."The Egestorfer pastor Wilhelm Bode wanted to receive the heidentypical regions for the posterity at the end of the 19th century He was committed to the protection of the heathland around the heath village Wilsede with its peculiarities Wilseder mountain and Totengrund. He found a financially strong sponsor for the land purchase in the University professor Andreas Thomsen from Münster, Germany, in 1906 he was able to acquire (at least partly) the ground of death and save it from urban sprawl.Today the Totengrund belongs to the property of the 1909 founded association nature park e.V. (VNP). He took over this and other areas and maintains them today. By 1913, the club acquired almost 3,000 acres of land around Wilsede. 1921 was the first underprotection - today, the nature reserve Lüneburg Heath covers 234 square kilometers.Sources:

The trail around the Totengrund offers a lot of variety and for this area also small climbs. Better with thick tires ;-) Beautiful!
