The royal castle of Fontainebleau (in French Château de Fontainebleau) is a mainly Renaissance and classical style castle, located in the center of the city of Fontainebleau (Seine-et-Marne), about sixty kilometers southeast of Paris, in France. The first traces of the Château de Fontainebleau date back to the 12th century. The last works were carried out in the 19th century.

An important place in the history of France, the Château de Fontainebleau was one of the residences of French sovereigns from François I (who made it his favorite residence) up to Napoleon III. Many kings have left their mark here in the construction and history of the castle, which is thus a witness to the different phases of the history of France from the Middle Ages onwards. Surrounded by a vast park and close to the forest of the same name, the castle is made up of medieval, Renaissance and classical elements. It bears witness to the encounter between Italian art and French tradition, expressed both in its architecture and in the interior decorations.

Located in the heart of the forest, Fontainebleau is an imperial city, marked by a rich history and an exceptional natural heritage. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, the royal castle has seen a succession of sovereigns for nearly eight centuries. From 1967 until 2002, Fontainebleau hosted renowned sports conscripts within the famous Joinville battalion. For cyclists, let us mention Jacques Anquetil, Laurent Fignon, and even Richard Virenque who frequented the famous battalion.

The other major attraction of the Pays de Fontainebleau is its forest, a hunting ground highly prized by kings, then a favorite subject of Impressionist painters. Today, there are nearly 22,000 hectares of unspoiled nature, mixing flatlands, rocky chaos and seas of sand that make this vast forest the dream playground for climbers, walkers, cyclists of course and other nature lovers.
