The royal castle of Fontainebleau (in French Château de Fontainebleau) is a mainly Renaissance and classic style castle, located in the center of the city of Fontainebleau (Seine and Marne), about sixty kilometers south-east of Paris, France. The first traces of the castle of Fontainebleau date back to the XII century. The last works were carried out in the 19th century.Important place in the history of France, the castle of Fontainebleau was one of the residences of the French sovereigns from Francis I (who made it his favorite home) until Napoleon III. Many kings have left their mark here in the construction and history of the castle, which is thus a witness of the different phases of the history of France from the Middle Ages onwards. Surrounded by a vast park and close to the homonymous forest, the castle is made up of medieval, Renaissance and classic elements. It testifies to the encounter between Italian art and French tradition, expressed both in its architecture and in the interior decorations.

Located in the heart of the forest, Fontainebleau is an imperial city, steeped in a rich history and an exceptional natural heritage. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, the royal castle has seen sovereigns succeed for almost eight centuries. From 1967 and until 2002, Fontainebleau welcomed the so-called renowned sportsmen into the famous battalion of Joinville. For cyclists, let us quote Jacques Anquetil, Laurent Fignon, and even Richard Virenque who frequented the famous battalion.
The other major attraction of the Pays de Fontainebleau is its forest, a hunting ground highly prized by kings, then a subject of predilection for impressionist painters. Today, nearly 22,000 hectares of unspoiled nature, combining plateaus, rocky chaos and seas of sand, make this vast forest the ideal playground for climbers, walkers, cyclists of course and other nature lovers.
