The Gerd Walter linden tree is a linden tree that stands as a solitary tree on the Hochsträß. The tree is visible from far away over Ulm. The tree was named after the conservationist Gerd Walter from Ulm. He planted the tree in 1950 after he returned from the Second World War. Walter bought it with 50-pfennig coins that were reissued in West Germany in 1949 as part of the currency reform. These depict a kneeling woman planting an (oak) tree, which is a symbol of the reconstruction of Germany after the Second World War.
