A symbol of hope, bought and planted by Gerd Walter after his return from captivity with the help of 50 pfennig coins. The 50 pfennig coins showed a woman planting a tree on the back, so G. Walter collected these coins and made the symbol a reality. Due to its prominent location, the lime tree is clearly recognizable from many points of the Ulm Mountains (including the Eselsberg).

The Gerd Walter linden tree is a linden tree that stands as a solitary tree on the Hochsträß. The tree is visible from far away over Ulm. The tree was named after the conservationist Gerd Walter from Ulm. He planted the tree in 1950 after he returned from the Second World War. Walter bought it with 50-pfennig coins that were reissued in West Germany in 1949 as part of the currency reform. These depict a kneeling woman planting an (oak) tree, which is a symbol of the reconstruction of Germany after the Second World War.

Wonderful view over the Danube valley towards the Alps ... and if the weather is right, a wonderful alpine panorama.
