Fort Ciuto was built between 1889 and 1892 to defend the port of Vado.
The original construction was in stone and brick, later it was largely covered with concrete.

Ciuto Fortress was a 19th-century defensive building, situated on a hill behind the port of Savona - Vado and Quiliano, at an altitude of 400 m above sea level.

      Change history and description

The fortress formed a defensive system of the coast and the bay of Savona - Vado Ligure as well as a barrier to the Colle di Cadibona, which included the lower part of the Madonna degli Angeli fortress and the Madonna del Monte fortress.

It was built by the Savoy family around 1885 and remained in operation until the end of the Second World War.

From a strategic point of view, this is the largest and most important fortress of the three. It was obtained almost exclusively by excavating the mountain peak and during the war period between 1939 and 1943 it had significant changes with heavy concrete reinforcements for the positioning of the landing and anti-aircraft batteries. it is in poor condition, although the damage caused by the French Navy's heavy bombing in 1940 was almost non-existent.
