For a long time, clay and loam were extracted in the west of Gochsheim. However, mining was not profitable due to numerous lime inclusions (Kalkmännle) and was finally abandoned in 1976. A few years later, one of the largest crested newt populations in Germany was discovered in the old walls. In 1986 the area was designated as a nature reserve.
