The waterway was built in 1880 to connect the Prussian port of Wilhelmshaven, an exclave in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, with the Prussian East Frisia. The canal was originally designed for ships with a length of up to 33 meters and a deadweight of 300 tons.
