The Ems-Jade Canal has great tourist value for water sports enthusiasts as a connection through the inland between the Jade and the Dutch coast. Every year 5,200 pleasure craft and 380 passenger ships sail there, and inland vessels transport around 50,000 tons.
The waterway was built in 1880 to connect the Prussian port of Wilhelmshaven, an exclave in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, with the Prussian East Frisia. The canal was originally designed for ships with a length of up to 33 meters and a deadweight of 300 tons.
