The city is located in an oasis belonging to the edges of the Sahara desert, south-west of the capital Tunis (from which it is about 450 kilometers away) and north-west of Chott el-Jerid. It is surrounded by over a thousand hectares of palm groves, the extraordinarily preserved architecture of the city and the typical Berber one in yellow and brown bricks.
