Between 1818 and 1828 the Emperor Alexander Festival was established on the Karthauser in Koblenz. It was the largest and most important of the Koblenz fortifications. Only the so-called lion gate - a gate system - has survived to this day, which is adorned on the side by iron reliefs of two ancient hybrid creatures about 3 meters high. Popularly they were referred to as lions, but they are so-called griffins, which at this point, as we know from ancient gates, function as "guardian figures". Between the griffin reliefs and above the passage, the following text is inscribed in individual letters: "VESTE KAISER ALEXANDER / BUILT UNDER KOENIG FRIEDRDICH WILHELM III. / IN THE YEARS 1817 TO 1822". The fortress was named after Alexander I. Pavlovich Romanov (1777-1825), Emperor of Russia.

Since Koblenz became the seat of a Prussian general command in 1815, it has been systematically converted into a fortress. The city developed into the largest fortress in Europe and the largest garrison town in Germany. The Emperor Alexander Fortress was the largest fortress built in Koblenz. Today only the lion gate, the Hübeling battery and the outpost Fort Konstantin can be seen. The fortress of Emperor Alexander was built between 1817 and 1822 according to plans by Claudius Franz Joseph Le Bauld de Nans and it was disentangled in 1922. The site was transferred to the city of Koblenz in 1934. A new residential area should be built here. After the First World War, the remains of the fortress were used as emergency accommodation, which were cleared in 1961 and 1962. In 1964 these areas were also completely destroyed. The fortress area originally extended over large areas of the districts of Rauental (Bölcke barracks), Moselweiß (main cemetery) and over the Karthaus, where the course of the fortress can still be seen on the road.

The fortress Kaiser Alexander was the largest fortress in the fortress and garrison town of Koblenz. After the First World War, the French insisted on the demolition of Kaiser Alexander. Only the lion gate remained.
