Donchery was the site of a historic meeting between Emperor Napoleon III and Otto von Bismarck, Chancellor of Prussia, on September 2, 1870, after the Battle of Sedan during the Franco-Prussian War. The meeting took place in a railway carriage near Donchery Bridge, where Napoleon III agreed to surrender and end the war. The name Donchery comes from a Latin word meaning "fortified place".
