Saxony Tower with Chapel of Reconciliation

More than 1,200 years ago there was a village settlement in the area of today's Trausnitz. Because of the danger of raids by the predatory Avars, a horse-riding people from the east, the villagers of the village then probably known as “Sessenkirchen” or “Saechsenkirchen” built a building in the 8th century (around 794) under Charlemagne, which is still in existence today Defense tower preserved in the center of the village.
A refuge, 19 m high with a square floor plan and 1.50 meter thick walls. This is the oldest, fortified building in the area.
The cattle were kept on the ground floor. The supplies were stacked on the first false ceiling and women and children were protected on the second mezzanine. The able-bodied men stood guard on the flat roof until the enemies withdrew again.
In 1325 the Pope brought about the reconciliation of Louis the Bavarian and Frederick the Fair. For this occasion, the Reconciliation Chapel was built by the Zenger family. In the chapel there are still iron rings and iron chains that, according to legend, were used to bind Frederick of Austria, as well as battle and reconciliation images and gravestones of the castle lords. In 1730 the chapel was structurally extended and served as the parish church “St. Wenceslas.” In 1892 the nave was demolished again.
The Sachsenturm is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Germany.

More than 1200 years ago there was a settlement in the area of Trausnitz. Around 794 under Charlemagne, the villagers of "Saechsenhausen" built the defensive tower that is still preserved today. An escape castle 19 m high and 1.5 m thick walls. The Sachsenturm is one of the oldest buildings in Germany. Next to it is the Chapel of Reconciliation, which was built by the Zengers on the occasion of the reconciliation by the Pope of Ludwig of Bavaria and Friedrich the Beautiful, in 1325.
