Behind the southern exit of the palace park, at the northern end of Ossietzkystrasse, is Majakowskiring, now a quiet residential area with comfortable single-family homes. The area already had a similar character at the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, the oval ring road was still called Viktoriastrasse in one part and Kronprinzenstrasse in the other and was the heart of a suburban settlement popular with artists and entrepreneurs. On August 9, 1945, the Soviet military administration declared the entire residential area a restricted area and confiscated the houses in order to make them available as living quarters for high-ranking officers of the Red Army. A guarded wooden fence shielded the military area called "Grodok" (little town). In addition to the officers, KPD functionaries who had returned from exile were also housed here, and after the founding of the GDR, the Soviet military left the houses completely to the new government. In 1950, the ring road was named after the Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893–1930). The wooden fence was replaced by a wall behind which almost the entire GDR government lived in the 1950s. Most of the houses from that time have now been demolished and replaced by more modern buildings.

The exhibition "The Pankow Rulers" documents the history of this special residential area with numerous original documents and historical photos. It is located in the gatehouses of the Schönhausen palace complex (Ossietzkystraße 44-45).

This is where the Two Plus Four negotiations took place in 1990.
The Two Plus Four Treaty is therefore considered the final peace settlement with Germany after the Second World War and thus marks the end of the post-war period. The two-plus-four negotiations are being judged a feat of international diplomacy. Problems that shaped and shaped an entire era were solved within a very short time.
