The Trail Camp is also known as High Camp. It is one busy spot during peak season (June through October). It resides at 12,000 feet of elevation. You can use this camp as a stopping point before summiting Mount Whitney in the morning. You will become more accustomed to the altitude than summiting in one day.

The Trail Camp has a lot of established campsites. It also has the last reliable source of water. There are nice little alpine lakes where you can get water which has to be treated. Since the campsite is located at hard granite rock and there are no restrooms or pit toilets, all solid human waste must be packed out. The forest service provides poop kits at the Ranger Station when you pick up your permit.

Also make sure that your food and scented items are safely stored away in your portable-bear box which is a requirement on Whitney. There are no bears at the camp, but critters like Pikas, birds and especially marmots. The Forest Service recommends that you leave your tent flaps open, and your pack compartments loose so that the critters can have a look around instead of chewing through the fabric.

To camp here, you need to have a valid permit from the forest service. Every year, there is a lottery to climb up Mount Whitney. You can apply between February 1 and March 15 at recreation.gov/permits/233260
