The church owes its name to Saint Nicholas. He was Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor in the fifth century and later patron of various cities, seafarers and children. The "Nikolai Church" was named in 1929 on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the then Oldenburg seaside resort.
