    Kreutberg near Altmannstein

The Kreutberg is one of the most beautiful landscape conservation areas in the Schambach Valley. The approximately 30-hectare protected area is diversely structured. Semi-arid grasslands and juniper heaths cover vast areas, interspersed with rocky outcrops and genuine dry grassland.
The circular hiking trail, which offers magnificent views of the landscape, leads past magnificent rock formations, particularly through the so-called Rock Garden with the "Kreutberg Lion," a rock with a lion-like shape. We encounter numerous rare and protected plants typical of the dry grasslands of the Altmühl Valley and its tributaries.
On a walk in early spring (March/April), we are greeted by the violet glow of pasque flowers, also called "daffodils" due to their flowering time and their use in folk customs. At the same time, in semi-arid and dry grasslands, yellow-flowering spring cinquefoil can be found. Its name refers to its palmate leaves, and its stems are more hairy in drier locations.
Directly on the rocks at this time of year, the otherwise very rare mountain cinquefoil can also be observed, with its tiny yellow flowers forming a dense cluster. Together with the inconspicuous white-flowering spring celandine and the early speedwell, which only opens its sky-blue blossoms at midday, as well as the peculiarly blue-green frosted, mixed-leaved pursewort, the mountain cinquefoil forms a plant community that already scatters its fruits by the end of May. During the hot summer days, these plants are no longer visible; they survive as seeds that only germinate in late autumn.

Pure nature in the Kreutberg nature reserve. You can also just do the Kreutbergrunde from the hiking car park.
