The Castle of Otranto, also known as Castello Aragonese, is a pentagonal building surrounded by a moat. It was built at the behest of Alfonso of Aragon starting from 1485 although most likely in the same place there was already a fortification built in the period of domination by Frederick of Swabia in the thirteenth century. The current appearance is due to the latest changes made in the 17th century by Antonio de Mendoza and Don Pedro of Toledo, then lords of the city. Their noble shields are still visible on the side of the bastion while the emblem of Charles V of Habsburg stands above the entrance portal.

The fortress built by the Aragonese and built between 1485 and 1498 to protect the city freed by the Turks, looks like a massive and imposing building.

The castle of Otranto is the fortress of the homonymous city.
The castle is closely related to the town walls with which it forms a single defensive system.
