  • The Brunssummerheide lies on the border between Germany and the Netherlands between the villages of Brunssum, Heerlen and Landgraf bei Kerkrade. The Brunssummerheide is a 580 hectare heathland area with shrub heaths, small raised bog-like vegetation units, pine forests, swamp forests, lakes and open sand areas. In the middle of the Brunssummerheide rises a brook called "Rode Beek" in Dutch and "Roter Bach" in German. The brook got its name because it carries ferrous, acidic water. The iron oxidizes in an acidic environment and turns red. In the source area of this brook there is a small, raised bog-like vegetation. A little further down the stream there is a small section for "foot bathing". You cannot swim properly here because the water is much too shallow. However, children can splash around in the water here. Some dog owners also let their dogs bathe here. Children and dogs have to share that little bit of water. From this beach you can take a look at the vegetation rich in peat moss. From here you also have a beautiful view of a moor lily field (Narthecium ossifragum), which is to be found between the peat moss and pipe grass (Molinia caerulescens).
