"Old Castle" - without castle - only ramparts and ditches. Our hike takes us to the "Old Castle", where in ancient times people were brought to safety. For the ascent a good condition is required.

Wallanlage / Fliehburg on 95000m2 enclosed area. Not a building, as one might suspect, but actually earth walls, long and then high earth walls. Amazing how much earth was moved there. The 2 surrounding walls, probably equipped with pallisades at that time, offered up to 1000 people protection in troubled times. The length of the inner ring is about 680 m, the length of the outer one about 1100 m. Space enough to keep cattle and even farm. Even the siege made little sense.
Presumably permanently inhabited at that time (200 BC), as it is located on important trade routes (Eisenstrasse - trade route for pig iron or finished iron goods such as weapons, etc.).
Today, however, only our imagination helps us to see what everything looked like. Through the excavations, the filling of the earth and the pallisades, attackers should probably have to overcome about 5 meters. (Source: H.Bensberg, h-bensberg.de)
There is also a trigonometric point on top that serves as a measurement point. The tip of the triangle points to the north. This is not a height measurement point.
(I didn't know yet, but Wikipedia told me)
