The mountain castle stands on a wooded and steeply rising mountain spur, which is surrounded by the two coming from the Hunsrück streams Flaumbach and Dünnbach. On the same mountain spur, separated only by a hollow, is located a few hundred meters to the north a little lower castle Treis. The Wildburg lies at an altitude of about 85 meters above the confluence of the two streams. At an altitude of 165 meters above sea level, it is just over one kilometer south of Treis in a side valley of the Moselle.

In August 2020, the Treis-Karden district made use of the option of the right of first refusal and bought Wildburg and Treis Castle for 1.7 million euros.
The aim is to preserve them within the scope of monument protection and to make them accessible to the public.

After a long drive on the Hunsrück, it is very nice to drive down the serpentines of Altstrimmig and Treis-Karden. "Wildburg" in the evening light is great
