Bude Canal opened in 1823 to carry sand for agricultural fertiliser to the hilly hinterland in Devon and Cornwall. Its construction cost £118,000, a considerable amount at the time. The canal runs 35 miles (56 km) from Bude to Vinworthy, Blagdon and Druxton.
Today, boats can no longer navigate the entire canal as two locks have been replaced by concrete damns. Nonetheless, it remains a pretty canal with abundant wildlife.
