Very nice castle located above Heimbach.
The castle was first mentioned in 1106 as the property of the lords of Hengebach. The castle later fell to the Count of Jülich. In 1687 the castle fell victim to a fire. The restorations started in 1904 were destroyed in the Second World War and later resumed. The keep, the remains of the palace and the castle walls have been preserved from the original castle. The castle was rebuilt in 2009 and has been used as an art academy ever since.

Nice place. There is even a small apartment in the tower that you can rent. Quaint ambience after a nice day of hiking at Lake Rursee. There is also a tarte flambee at the castle.

The Höhenburg is a 216 m above sea level that rises freely from the Rurtal. NN high mountain ridge built oval ring castle from the 12th to 14th centuries. The western courtyard of the 12th to 13th centuries with the keep / palace combination forms the core of the complex. The eastern part of the castle complex belongs to the expansion of the 14th century. These include the forecourt of the castle, the gardens and the kennel. The residential buildings on the south side above the Rur Valley, which are also set up for defense purposes, also originate from this construction phase. (Wikipedia)

Hengebach Castle was built in the 11th century on a gray rock. It is one of the oldest buildings in the Eifel. Over the centuries, the historic walls have had an eventful history. Various rulers once lived and ruled on the fortress. The lion of the Jülich family of counts still adorns the coat of arms. The courtyard rooms with rampart and keep are accessible all year round. The medieval castle, the beginnings of which date back to the 11th century, is enthroned above the Rur. It is considered a symbol of Heimbach and shapes the cityscape. The courtyard, the battlement and the castle keep are accessible all year round.

Ran to the castle, up to the castle, over the castle. The 65 or so steps are worth it.

The small detour via the castle should be planned for every hike through Heimbach!
