The island of Kranai (Marathonisi), which since 1898 is connected to Gythio land by a causeway, stands out for the traditional Maniot tower-house of Tzannetakis Grigorakis, which was built in 1829 by the beys of Mani to fortify Cranae after the rest of Greece enslaved to the Ottoman Turks only Mani remained free. Today, it houses the Historical and Ethnological Museum of Mani, hosting 5 centuries of Greek history. An exhibition of the routes that 70 foreign travelers who passed by Mani took, during five centuries. It exhibits manuscripts, printed material, works of art, historical artifacts, rare editions of old maps outlining all the stations of the travelers from the Renaissance to the 19th century. Separate sections show the work of the French Scientific Mission in Morea (1829-1832) and the development of the fortification facilities in the peninsula of Mani.
