For some, Carbon-Blanc (formerly "Le Charbon - Blancq", "Le Cherbon-Blancq", then "le Carbon-Blanc") is a derivative of "white charcoal" (leprosy). The town thus owes its name to the leper colony that was installed there in the Middle Ages, created by the monks of the Cistercian abbey Notre-Dame de Bonlieu. For others, Carbon-Blanc has its origin from the clayey white earth (charcoal) that is found everywhere at a shallow depth in the basement and which fed a tilery. Several places in the town also bear the name of "Terre Blanche", "Roche Blanche", "les Roches".
The term “white charcoal” was sometimes used in the south of Toulouse to designate the central part of the ear of corn, due to the fact that its color is white and that its lightness makes it an interesting fuel, in particular for “well setting” »The fire when you light the fireplace.
Carbon-Blanc is not only the smallest municipality of the Bordeaux Metropolis by its size (less than 4 square kilometers), but it is also one of the youngest since its creation dates from 1853, date on which a decree of Napoleon III separated the territory from that of Bassens.
