In 1944, residents of the community and holiday home owners decided to build a church in Marielyst in order to offer holidaymakers the opportunity to attend a church service.

Construction was delayed due to war and occupation. The foundation stone was laid in 1957 and the church was inaugurated in 1959.

The beach church in Marielyst has no cemetery. Surrounded by tall trees and the proximity to the Baltic Sea, the beach and the dike give it a special flair. The priests of the abbey are happy to preach a sermon here, hold weddings or celebrate Christmas and Easter services here every Sunday.

Today the Strandkirche is an independent foundation in the Danish Volkskirche, which is financed by contributions from the surrounding communities. Members of the community committee and friends of the beach church perceive the work as church servants, because only in this way can the church - as a living church - function.
