The catacombs, which were carved into the fortress hill, are located on the edge of the Salzburg St. Peter's Cemetery. They are most likely of late antique-early Christian origin and, despite their name, were not used as burial sites, but rather as early Christian meeting places.

A highlight of the Petersfriedhof are the catacombs carved into the Mönchsberg. Its origin goes back to late antiquity. The mystical rock caves served as both hermitages and burial grounds. The entrance is next to the graves of Nannerl Mozart and Michael Haydn. After the first 48 steps is the Gertrauden chapel from 1178, another 36 steps higher is the Maximus chapel. Admission is free with the Salzburg Card.
