Today it has a medieval style in the heart of Gravelines, dating from the 17th century. It is known for its aromatic and medicinal plants.
The powder magazines or powder magazines are scattered throughout the city to avoid any major risk of accident. In 1654, the explosion of the castle's powder keg destroyed part of the city and caused many casualties. In order to avoid a new tragic event, several smaller powder magazines were scattered throughout the city.
The Powder Magazine Carnot was a small powder magazine, also called dovecote, supplying the soldiers as close as possible to their surveillance post. It dates from the 17th century and includes a main room that could hold 170 barrels of powder, a hayloft and a cellar. We can still see the footprint of the protective wall that once surrounded the building.
