The Schaafheimer Warte is now rightly a lookout tower and in a certain sense was one from the beginning. The location of the watchtower, built in 1492 under the Archbishop of Mainz Berthold von Henneberg (1484-1504) on the 216 m high Binselberg, was well chosen: firstly, the course of the Landwehr up to the Schaafheim and Großostheim forests could be easily overlooked and monitored from here. Secondly, the so-called Schiffweg crossed the Landwehr on the Binselberg. This crossing had to be secured. The tower was part of the Bachgauer Landwehr. This was built in the early 1490s by the Electorate of Mainz between the Hanau and Mainz territories in the Bachgau, partly on the site of an old, dilapidated border security facility.
