The Streu is a nearly 42-kilometer-long, orographically right-bank and northern tributary of the Franconian Saale in Thuringia and Bavaria. The name Streu was written "Streuue" in the 8th century and "Strouua" around 1030.[4] It is derived via Common Germanic from the Indo-European root *sreu- "to flow" and has an equivalent, among other things – also with the initial t-insertion typical of Germanic and Balto-Slavic – in the Lithuanian word strovė, which means "strong current".[5] The river gave its names to the communities of Oberstreu and Heustreu as well as to the town of Mittelstreu and the forest area of Streuwald.[4] A further linguistic connection to the Streufelsberg as the source of the Streu is obvious, but has not yet been investigated in detail. On a map from 1628, the entire course of the river as far as Gemünden bears the name "Straÿ Flu".
