The Merrick Summit

Hiking

5.0

(27)

In the intriguingly-named Range of the Awful Hand, hiking up the Merrick sets you on the highest peak in Southern Scotland. This esteemed Corbett tops out at 2,766 feet (843 m) and provides absolutely breathtaking views on clear days.

Paths vary on hiking trails up the Merrick and range from clear, defined paths to open grassy slopes and pathless bogs, depending on your chosen ascent. Nevertheless, the mountain doesn’t present any technical challenges and makes for a wonderful summit for a family adventure or for the majority of hillwalkers.

Endless views over mountains and forests

The Merrick stands in the magnificent Galloway Forest Park, home to red deer, golden eagles and pine martens. Not only is this wild forest wonderful for spotting wildlife, it was also the UK’s first Dark Sky Park. As you hike, keep your eyes on the skies for beautiful birds of prey and when your hike is behind you and your feet are up in a campsite, keep looking skywards for the Milky Way.

When you reach the Merrick’s summit cairn, the landscape unfolds 360 degrees around you and deserves your full attention. To the west, marvel at the views across the North Channel to Northern Ireland. In every other direction the scenery is dominated by wild mountains, hills and lochs, a breathtaking sight.

Summer offers the best hiking weather on the Merrick but you can summit this Marilyn any time of year if the weather suits you. Winter can bring snow and the eastern route from Loch Valley is extremely boggy and wet, particularly after rain.

Parking can be found at the eastern end of Loch Trool, whilst the visitor centre with a cafe and toilets is at Stroan Bridge on the drive in. Newton Stewart to the south is the largest nearby settlement.

    Hiking

Rising from Galloway Forest Park, the first area in the UK to be given Dark Sky Park status, The Merrick is one of the five fingers of the ‘Range of the Awful Hand’ and the highest summit in Southern Scotland. Theoretically, the line of sight from Merrick’s summit to Snowdon is the longest in Britain.

Great little hike with little foot traffic and a free carpark. Lovely views when the clouds lift and babbling brooks all over.

    Hiking

Merrick is the biggest of the Donald classification of hills in the southern uplands of Scotland. Use the Merrick trail (from the upper Bruce's stone car park) if you're looking for the most straight forward ascent/descent option - a total of around 14km. Alternatively, do what I did and plan a multi-day route involving additional mountains in this stunning area of Galloway.
