The aquarium was opened in 1997 and has a total of seven floors. The focus is on local marine life, including the southern chain of islands, which is also part of Kagoshima Prefecture.

The most impressive attraction of the aquarium is the massive "Kuroshio Tank", in which fish of all sizes occur. There are swarms of small fish, rays and even a huge whale shark.
